Ephesians 2:13-16 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
One of the deepest realities of our world of darkness is that we are cut off from each other. In some way, all of history can be read as one sad story of the things we do to each other: we hurt each other, we kill each other, we enslave each other, and we oppress each other. The hope of Advent is that in Christ, the dividing wall of hostility between fellow human beings will be torn down. We cannot be unified until we are unified in Christ. In a culture that understandably despairs over its own deep divisions, we cultivate a longing for Christ.
